IEC3: Directional design
In this series of ten related Learning Objects, learners design chairs, a lamp and a desk for specific purposes and environments. They are guided by a three part feedback loop to reflect on the need to minimise negative and optimise positive effects in the environments in which the objects will be used. The key learning outcome is to create a sustainable product that will contribute to a sustainable future.
Learners are encouraged to solve problems - creatively. They are given access to an authentic range of resources and tools including a stakeholder (feedback) group and an electronic clipboard in which to record information about design prototypes. Feedback is rich and complex, with stakeholders critiquing the results of three prototypes built by the learner.
Access to real world design methods, tools and process is enriched by the ability to test prototypes in situ, within environments in which they will be used and to see the effects of designed items over time - from 1- 5 years.
