"Best OnlineLearning Solution: LearnX Awards 2009"

Background

The previous Safety Management Course required almost 5½hours to complete and was a combination of face to face and self paced components. It had been in place for three years and in this time had little impact on the standard of safety in the Bank.

Solution

The course is scenario based and puts the learner in  realistic situation that they must solve in the role of Branch or Office Manager. The course allows learners to explore all aspects of a workplace incident from root cause to the incident itself and appropriately respond to ensure the measures are in place to reduce the risk of it reoccuring. The learning also shows future consequences of past actions; allowing learners to review the consequences of doing (or not doing) certain safety activities.

Benefits

There are a number of benefits of this learning; these include:

  • It is interactive and practical to the workplace.
  • It appeals to a broad range of learning styles.
  • Different target audiences are catered for (eg. Branch Network, Support Office and Managers of 'mobile' employees).
  • OHS messages are consistent and not dependent on facilitator knowledge, experience and style.
  • It takes significantly less time to complete (time saving of almost 4½hours when compared to the previous course).
  • There are links to the Bank's intranet site for additional information.
  • Removes the need for travel and associated costs because it is delivered through eLearning.
  • Can be completed at any time and either in one sitting or in parts.

Providing managers with a course that is interactive, work related, flexible and time efficient are the major advantages of our approach. That and it delivered very tangible busines benefits through cost reduction and improved Loss Time Injury Rate. The introduction of the new course resulted in a fall of the Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR), which fell from 2.8 in September to 2.3 in December, a considerable drop.
