The Learning Federation - Design a Chair

Students are encouraged toward independent and creative problem solving. Learners have access to authentic resources and tools including a stakeholder group and an electronic clipboard for recording information about design prototypes. Feedback is rich and complex, with stakeholder comments critiquing the results of three prototypes built by the learner. Access to real world design methods, tools and process is enriched by the ability to test prototypes in situ, within environments they will be used and to see the effects of designed items over time (1-5 years).

Museum Victoria - Immegration Museum Exhibit

The Screen Lounge is located on the ground level inside the Immigration Discovery Centre (IDC). Its purpose is to show AV content related to the immigration experience in historical and contemporary perspectives. The content will be enhanced the exhibition themes and public program activities. The interactive display provided a new engaging experience (other than reading books and computer screens) within the IDC where 1 to 3 people can enjoy in comfortable seating.

Museum Victoria - Italian Carlton

Delivered on CD-ROM and also on the web, allowing resources to be available publicly while the teacher activities can be limited to CD-ROM. The resources were presented around a map of Carlton, visiting school children use the map locations to interact with relevant themes, people, their stories and the places to which they belong. The map included interactive ‘hotspots’ and‘roll-overs’, providing access to extended information. The re

Museum Victoria – Dinosaur Walk Timeline

The timeline interactive is part of a permanent exhibit at Museum Victoria. Patrons can explore a 600 Million year timeline featuring key events, animals and plants through time. Users select an image from the left or right of the center image or they can scroll through the timeline using the slider button at the bottom.

Museum Victoria – Behind the Scenes

The key concept of this interactive is to provide learners of the ‘game’ with an understanding of how an exhibition or collection is developed “Behind the Scenes” at a museum, including the storage of objects/artefacts, collection management tools used, the categorization of objects within an exhibition and the decision making process involved.

Museum Victoria – Sportsworks

Museum Victoria required a new interactive to be developed for the refurbished Sportsworks exhibition. It was finalised as a screen-based quiz, appearing in the exhibition on two touch screens located in a central display. The computer quiz was also to be accessible on the ScienceWorks website and for schools to use in classrooms as a stand-alone product. It was all informed by an engaging design, with animated and personalised feedback. A simple, functional and highly focused piece of work... that did just that: work for the audience it was created for.

Museum Victoria – Bug Catcher

Working from a set of business objectives based around driving specific exhibitions, Nine Lanterns devised highly interactive learning resources for use in classrooms to provide a (virtual) taste of the experience that would be gained in a real museum visit. Museums are distinguished by their presentation of real artefacts - these are represented in our learning resources by original, high quality, photography and other rich media elements. On a purely technical note, content was updated and exchanged between the Museums' XML schema and the learning Object schema using XSLT to allow for last minute dynamic modifications - very satisfying (for our developers!).

IAG - General Insurance Code of Practice

This module deals with IAG internal policies. Learners are presented with two scenarios relating to each of the subject matter areas. They are then given resources to explore, including a managers comment and policy documents. Using this information the learner is then required to respond to a series of questions. Questions provide formative feedback, assisting the learning process.

IAG - Membership Online System Training

This is a systems training course. The learner is presented with four (4) scenarios or customers. The learner is presented with customers who have contacted IAG to update their insurance details. The learner is able to view the details, then, how they are applied to the system sequentially and in an instructed manner. The training for the system was developed using Captivate.

ACCYO - Moodle +Plus LMS

Delivering course content under a fee for service arrangement meant ACCYO had to be able to report and track learners effectively for clients. Nine Lanterns developed the Moodle +Plus LMS for this set of requirements, creating custom modules. This means ACCYO is able to update the core Moodle, taking advantage of future functionality  and version releases, without requiring customisations to be implemented again.

ACCYO - Nebula CAS

ACCYO is a non-profit organisation aimed at providing training for child and youth protection.Originally the course was deployed  for ACCYO using the Nebula CAS. They later licensed the content to the Defense Department . Nine Lanterns was able to apply a new skin and redeploy the content requiring minimum investment.

The Learning Federation - Poetry

These learning objects situate learners as members of a community with an interest in poetry. Learners write and edit poems to include in a personal anthology. Each member creates their own profile for the community and 'downloads' favourite poems into this member profile. 'Tools' and 'resources' are provided alongside poems. Learners can listen to poems and there are text explanations about each genre. Tools include the star ratings and free text entry comments boxes, plus tools that allow learners to find out more about each poem (e.g. a pattern tool highlights poem patterns) as well as to write poems.

Affinity3 - Lottery Ticket Management System

A process based training module for correct use of computer applications. In this case the application is a lottery ticket management system. This module includes a mentor figure, a formative feedback loop and scenario resource.
The learner is required to interact with an authentic version of the application acquired using captivate. The learner uses the application in an identical fashion to a real life situation.

Throughout this series of learning objects that make up the Innovation Cycle environment, students participate in practical tasks that require real world skills. They are encouraged to resolve authentic, real world problems. In each learning object students utilise resources, conduct research, analyse results and collate data. Students eventually undertake their own innovations, applying what they have learnt to their own innovation projects.

The Advertising Design Course for newspaper advertising reps is based upon exploratory scenarios with a number of additional scaffolds or resources which aid the learning process. The learner is asked to critique an existing advertisement.

Semi-fixed learning model with flexible applications including movie segments, discrete pages and links to external systems such as discussion forums and email. Fuzz2buzz - Online World Wide Community For Users

An online world wide community for users of the Tony Buzan products and methodologise. It allows users to contribute, share and build a greater understanding of the products by speaking with others through forums.  The site builds a community around people and professionals who use the Tony Buzan productivity tools, resources and products. This community is comprised of an international audience which is plotted using integration with Google Maps and IP records from the database. The site also has a simple multi-theme skin allowing users to choose their preferred colour for the entire site.

Hudson Recruitment - Internal Sales & Account Management Processes

Developed using the Nebula CAS the course reinforces Hudson’s internal sales and account management processes. There are a range of scenarios where the learner is taken through a meeting or discussion with a client. At each decision point in the conversation the learner is provided with an “Advisor Activity” where they must “Advise” or “Do not Advise” certain actions. Incorrect responses are given additional hints and tips in the form of formative feedback in order to guide the learner to the correct behaviour.

Connex - Incident Management System Training

This scenario based learning object begins with an introduction to the new IMS online reporting system. Following the introduction learners are presented with several scenarios which reflect real incidents. Using this information the learner must use a simulation of the system to record the incident. Learners are given formative feedback as they work through the forms in the system, directing them to the correct field when they select incorrectly and extending the task when they complete each step. The scaffolded experiential approach provided a safe ‘sand box’ for the learner to experiment.

Reece has a number of businesses opperating under its brand, such as Reece Plumbing, Reece Bathrooms and Reece Projects. The learner management system developed for Reece contains a competency framework module which manages competencies and courses (internal / external and online / face-to-face). The competency framework is aligned to nationally required qualifications and their internal training requirements.

A typical compliance EEO course developed in a very atypical way. Here learners are exposed to authentic Fairfax Media work environments in a rich user experience. Interaction is highly visual and intuitive; and learning occurs as a result of expert feedback, authentic resources and targeted cognitive supports. This is a highly meaningful experience for Fairfax workers and recognises that learners need real-world experiences to explore, to respond to and to test their knowledge within.

Fairfax - Occupational Health & Safety

A typical compliance OHS course developed in a very atypical way. Here learners are exposed to authentic Fairfax Media work environments in a photographically rich user experience. Navigation is via a topographical map, rather than a bland and non-meaningful menu. Interaction is highly visual and intuitive; and learning occurs as a result of expert feedback, authentic resources and targeted cognitive supports. This is a highly meaningful experience for Fairfax workers and recognises that learners need real-world experiences to explore, to respond to and to test their knowledge within.

John Holland - Community Platform

This project included the development of an online informal learning delivery platform. It allowed sharing of peer to peer content, files and a competency mangement tool. John Holland intends to use the system as a tool for managing their ongoing CPD and Engineering Australia’s competecy framework. The system means learners can upload evidence which can be approved by their manager as competent.

Telstra - Intranet Portal and User Guide Support

Intranet portal and user guide for IP telephony support. Working closely with the team at Dimension Data and Telstra, Nine Lanterns delivered learning for users of Cisco and Polycom IP Telephony that was usable, clear and engaging. The solution provides for just-in-time (performance based) learning, achieving the goal of demystifying the features of an IP telephone for Telstra clients.

CitiPower and Powercor - Working On Live Low Voltage Online Training

The learner is provided with a number of scenario based learning activities which cover a range of safety activities from PPE and hazard identification through to procedural learning and completing reports. Nine Lanterns developed a series of re-usable page types or interactions to develop training for working on live low voltage. The interactions included positioning workers in the correct position, or selecting appropriate PPE and tools for a given scenario. The course is scenario based, placing activities in the context of an authentic, real life activity relating to working on live low voltage.

Reliance Petroleum - HSSEQ Awareness Training

The Health, Safety, Security, Environment and Quality (HSSEQ) learning object is designed using exploratory scenarios where the learner is asked to view, identify and correct.The learning outcomes are reinforced using formative feedback. Created with multiple pathways to be delivered to all new staff and contractors, this is an example of how a single module with multiple pathways allows for single source authoring of content common to all. The course covers the identification and correction of hazards in all reliance environments from the office to working with large machinery and vehicles in a production environment.

Santos - Stepback and Job Hazard Analysis

After an introduction to the subject matter the learner has the option of entering six scenarios in any order. Scenarios are photographic and  contain a range of hazards and decoys. The learner finds hazards by clicking on screen and selecting if there is or is not one present. Where a hazard is present the learner is then required to do a number of follow-up activities which take them through the process of performing a Stepback, for example identify type of hazard, required/appropriate PPE, etc.

Victoria Department of Justice - Security Policies and Procedures

The Victorian Department of Justice identified a requirement to make training relating to information security policies and procedures more accessible. As The Victorian Department of Justice has a dispersed workforce, of approximately 6000 staff, eLearning was used as the most appropriate means of delivery. Scenarios were developed for the home, car and office. Each location was photographic and authentic – we took shots of the actual offices where the learner needed to apply their knowledge.

CSAT- Ambulance & Paramedics Managing Patients With Dementia

This project was developed to meet the needs of ambulance workers and paramedics nationally. With dementia becoming an important health issue, many ambulance staff require up skilling in how to manage patients with dementia. The solution offered was developed in Nebula, allowing for re-use of page types and provided learners with experiential, problem based learning activities. The module uses video and audio for scenarios and resources.

IAG - Risk & Compliance Training (6 Modules)

The course uses a scenario based learning design. Information is conveyed from different viewpoints - from managers with varying levels of knowledge and skill such as a 'novice' and an 'experienced manager’. The use of alternative perspectives motivates learners to review, assess and reach their own decisions. Using various authentic resources and these alternative perspectives, learners are required to respond to 4 typical risk situations at IAG. 6 Modules - Introduction, Privacy Act, General Insurance Code of Practice, Trade Practices Act, Insurance Contract Act, Financial Services Reform Act.

IAG - Corporate Fraud

This module provides a scenario based exploratory learning environment. Learners assume the role of a Fraud Investigator at IAG. They undertake a series of activites which simulate various types of investigation and appraisle of potentially fraudulent activities. The user is briefed by a (fictional) Senior Manager at IAG to account for the increase of fraudulent behaviour, serious misconduct and dishonesty within the organisation. The learner has a number of resource available to assist their learning such as a virtual mentor and real IAG policy documents.

IAG - Buddy Basics

In this module the objective is to learn the fundamentals of being a “buddy” at IAG. The course gave learners an understanding of the processes related to being a Manager and a buddy. The one hour course covered the following learning outcomes: Recognise a suitable buddy based on the suggested selection criteria. Describe the observation techniques that will be used by a buddy. Apply the preferred feedback model when giving feedback to the new team member. Create and apply SMART development activities.

IAG - Compulsory Third Party Insurance

A scenario based learning object which uses a mentor figure to guide the learner through the learning object. Learners witness first hand the consequences of insurance choices when Kylie is involved in a car accident. This module engages learners immediately with Kylie’s story, beginning with her research and purchase of Compulsory Third Party insurance. As learners progress they assume the roles of both Kylie and the NRMA service representative in turn, viewing needs and impacts from both sides of the service relationship.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia - Safety Management Training

All of CBA's managers explored the 3D environment to practice putting in place measures that would prevent incidents from occuring. To ensure the learning was carried easil from the computer to the workplace, we used of real actors, shot against green screens, then super-imposed into the 3D environments of the banks' branches and offices. The learner has access to a wide range of tools and scaffolds to assist in their choices . For example a notebook (virtual PDA Device with printable takeaway notes), help features and authentic policy documents linked from the course to the CBA Intranet.

Another independent thinking and creative problem solving design that accounts for complex perspectives, real-world problems and multiple ‘correct’ answers. For this literacy series of learning objects, a scaffolded approach encourages learners to acquire confidence in a range of tasks and build their skills over time. Gradations of complexity in the content take the learner from a modeled activity, through to a scaffolded practice task to a final ‘build’ section where they complete tasks as they would in the real-world – without structured support and with individual freedom to make mistakes.

In this series of ten related Learning Objects, learners design chairs, a lamp and a desk for specific purposes and environments. The Good Food, Great Health interactives are fun to use, interesting and informative, and relevant to student nutrition today. The student is encouraged to assess and measure their own daily diet against the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI), and discover the importance of good nutrition and a balanced diet to maintaining a healthy body. The interactives provide the student with opportunities to learn about energy values of food, the link between poor nutrition and disease, and how to construct and apply a healthy diet to their own lifestyle.

Healthline for young people

An educational interactive that explores health resources within the community by allowing students to select specific topics and navigate through a town centre, visiting shops and typical services to locate the community member whom they would like to answer their questions. As well as being able to explore various areas within a "world" and interview the appropriate professionals, the student can store the responses they have obtained and create their own documentary for playback.
