eLearning 2.0: A new approach to organisational learning

In many ways, the recent focus on Web 2.0 technologies (wiki's, blogs, social networks, trust networks, social tags, etc.) is simply drawing us back to some fundamentals in learning that many in organisational L&D appear to have forgotten over the last 20 years or so. Namely, that Communication is the vital ingredient in any learning experience.

Martyn presented a paper at the 2007 AITD conference, where he described how we should be re-focusing on the 'C' of Communication rather than of 'C' of Content to help us build collaborative, just-in-time and peer-to-peer learning experiences. All of which can be done for a fraction of the cost of Content experiences.

The challenge in this new environment is for organisations is to move training budgets away from formal learning (whether classroom or online) to building opportunities for informal learning, using content as a resource rather than the reason for learning. And at the same time, re-engaging staff to communicate more - with peers, with mentors, with managers - infusing daily work practices with what we all do most naturally: learn from those around us.
